Beards are back in style, and they look great on anyone who wants to show off their facial hair. If you’re looking to get a new haircut or shave, now might be the time to try out a beard instead.
Beards are easy to grow, maintain, and can add some serious depth to your overall appearance. However, to keep them in good shape, you need to know how to care for and maintain them.
This article tells you all you need to know about combing your beard, including our favorite tips and tricks to keep it looking at its best. Let’s jump right in.
Ways Of Combing Your Short Beard
1. Using A Beard Brush
A beard brush is an essential tool when it comes to keeping your beard clean and tidy. It helps remove excess oil from your face that could cause itching or flaking.
The bristles also help to distribute oils evenly throughout your beard so you don’t end up with clumps of grease.
You can find beard brushes in both cheap and expensive models, but we recommend going for the more expensive brush since they tend to last longer than cheaper models and will leave your beard with a finer finish.
You can also get a natural-bristle beard brush to comb your beard. They help to spread sebum and the natural oils in your hair to keep facial hair as soft as possible.
Look for a brush made out of boar or horsehair to clean your beard thoroughly. Something like this ZilberHaar brush will be perfect!
You can buy beard brushes from the grooming section of big box stores or on beard-care sites online.
2. Put 2-3 Drops Of Oil On The Brush
Start by applying two to three drops of oil onto the brush. Then run the brush through your beard while holding it close to your chin area.
Move the brush slowly through your beard, making sure not to drag it across your skin.
The oil will then soak into your beard and coat it evenly. Once done, rinse the brush under warm water and pat dry with a towel.
Beard oil is essential as it moisturizes and strengthens your beard hair, so it stays soft and grows healthily. As a rule of thumb, the fewer ingredients an oil has, the better it will be for your facial hair.
Argan and jojoba oil are both good ingredients to look for when searching for beard oil. One of our personal favorites is this oil from Honest Amish.
3. Brush Your Cheeks Following The Grain Of Your Beard
When brushing your beard, make sure to follow the grain of your beard. By this, we essentially mean that you should be brushing down towards your neck and shoulders.
Use light pressure so the bristles can get in between the hairs and touch your face slightly. Never brush the beard when it’s wet as the oil will not absorb, and you can tear out some of your beard hair.
4. Clean The Bristles When Finished
After using the brush, shake out any dead skin or loose hairs by tapping the back of it. Run your fingers through the bristles to get rid of any particles.
Now you can take it apart and give the bristles a quick wash. Rinse the brush under warm running water and let it air dry completely before storing away.
Ways Of Combing Your Long Beard
1. Use A Beard Comb With Wide And Narrow Grips Between The Teeth
One side of the beard comb is used for coarse hair, and the other for finer hair. The teeth can also have blunt ends or sharp tips depending on what type of hair you want to comb.
Generally, blunt ends stop your long beard from ripping or falling out. You should also look for a comb made of rubber or wood since they worked most effectively.
2. Put 4-5 Drops Of Beard Oil Into Your Hair
For best results, apply four to five drops of beard oil into your hair. Use your palm and rub it into your beard.
This will soften your hair and prevent it from getting tangled. Work from the beard tips and down to the skin so it spreads evenly.
You mustn’t pull too hard on the roots of your beard because this could cause split ends. Instead, gently tug the hair and work it up and down.
If you can’t spread the oil throughout the whole beard, add a couple more drops of oil. You can then pass a small amount of beard balm too.
3. Start Combing Up And Away From Your Face
Combing up and away will fluff your beard up and help keep it looking neat.
Start combing at the base of your beard on your neckline and guide yourself up and away from the middle part of your face to separate hairs and ‘fluff’ the beard.
Work up slowly until your beard hairs point away from your face.
4. If You Hit A Snag, Pull The Comb Out Of Your Beard
If you hit a snag while combing, simply pull the comb out of your beard and start again. Don’t worry about pulling out all of your beard hair.
Just use your index finger and gently pull out the strands that are stuck together. Once you’re done, rinse the comb and repeat the motions.
5. Comb With The Grain Until All Of Your Beard Is Smooth
Now that your beard is sufficiently fluffed, continue combing, but this time, brush with the grain of the hair (downwards) until your beard sits right on your face and is smooth throughout.
Use slow and short strokes. Straighten it the way you want it to grow and style it to the shape you want.
6. Work The Mustache Out And Away From Your Mouth
Start from the middle of the mustache and work your way around the edges. Always remember to comb your mustache outwards toward the corners of the mouth.
7. Afterward, Apply Beard Balm
Once you’ve finished combing your beard, apply a small amount of beard balm to your hands and run them over your beard.
Rub the balm in and around your beard to moisturize it and make it easier to manage.
8. Wipe The Comb Clean When Done
Use a cleaning rag to get in between the comb’s teeth to clean out oils or residue left on them. Start at the base of the teeth and wipe down toward the ends to clean all over the brush.
9. Wash Your Hands
When you’re done combing your beard, wash your hands to remove any residue left behind on your skin.
