How Often Should You Wash Your Beard?

When at a young age, a lot of people would’ve wished that they could grow a beard. Fast-forward however many years and now they have one, but nobody would tell them all of the little things like how to keep it soft, how often to wash it, and all of that jazz.

How Often Should You Wash Your Beard

However, although it seems like a lot to take in, the washing cycle is relatively easy. Once you have that sorted out, the rest will fall into place. Follow our guide to find out more on how often to wash your beard.

What Happens If You Don’t Wash Your Beard

One of the main things that will happen if you don’t wash your beard is that bits of food and drink residue will find a way to stick around.

Depending on how long your beard is, it will be a lot easier for debris to get caught in your facial hair, which isn’t pleasant for you or anyone near you.

This can of course be easily missed at times by the bearded person and will require some brushing or washing to try and get clean again.

Alternatively, some dried skin will always find its way into the clutches of your beard and will be unnoticeable once again, unless seen.

Because beards can be itchy or thick anyway, it makes it harder to notice when these unwanted visitors find their way into your facial hair.

How Often Should You Wash Your Beard?

Everyone needs to know the frequency of beard washing before it comes down to the routine itself and the different things you can use to keep your facial hair in top condition.

The simple answer is that you will need to wash your beard around 1 to 3 times a week.

This is a basic number that can be spread out once every two days or so to make sure that your beard is getting consistent attention.

However, if you have dry or sensitive skin, then it may be beneficial for you to slightly lower this number to around once or twice a week.

This helps to avoid any added aggravation and stress that you may be causing your skin and will still keep the beard clean.

By spacing out these washes over every 3 or 4 days, you’re able to provide the care that your facial hair needs, without sacrificing your skin’s wellbeing in return.

On top of this, if you wash your beard excessively then it can cause a lot of problems for your physical health.

For example, if you wash your beard more than twice a day, not only will you irritate the skin on your face, but you will also stunt your beard growth, making it harder for those who want a bigger or fuller beard.

Can You Wash Facial Hair With Just Water?

We recommend that you avoid washing your beard with cold water altogether because cold water has been commonly known to dry out the skin.

Because of how sensitive the skin can get underneath your facial hair, we find that it’s best to use warm water when available.

Those with dry skin will definitely need to look at using lukewarm water because the cold water could cause complications in their skin’s quality and health.

The reason that cold water is bad for your skin is that the coldness in the temperature will cause your skin’s pores to tighten.

This causes a lot of stress for your skin as small pieces of debris and bacteria can get caught in the pores and will then potentially become infected or cause common blemishes like spots and cuts.

Once this bacteria or debris is caught in your skin, it becomes hard to remove them with warm water and any cleaning products.

How To Wash Your Beard

We always recommend that you use specialist products specially made for tackling your beard. This makes sure that the sensitive skin under your facial hair doesn’t become too irritated or died out after washing.

Step One – Clean the area in and around the beard with lukewarm water to make sure that any sort of debris or leftover materials are washed away.

If you’re doing this in the shower, then the best thing to do is turn the water down slightly if you like your shower hot! Following this, massage a small amount of beard shampoo into your facial hair. Once you’ve covered it, rinse the area with lukewarm water.

Step Two – Apply beard conditioner into your facial hair and leave the conditioner for a minute or two to absorb into the hair. Once this has been absorbed fully, rinse through with water once again.

Step Three – Finish your shower and step out, find a comb, and start combing through the beard with a beard brush or a good comb. This helps to remove any knots or tangles that may have occurred.

Step Four – Apply a few drops of beard oil into your facial hair to give it a softer feel and a slick look. If you want to avoid any potential shininess, then mix the oil in with a small amount of beard moisturizer to soften the effects of the oil.

Step Five – Once again, use your beard brush or comb to comb through your facial hair to get your desired shape or form for your beard. Some prefer it to look sharper, whereas others might aim for a fuller, bigger look.

Final Thoughts

Because of how much people love their beards, there’s no reason why you can’t enjoy the cleaning process when having a shower.

Make sure that you use some of the best products that you can find and enjoy seeing how much healthier your beard looks. Because of sensitive skin and dry skin, it’s important not to get too carried away.

Make sure that you only wash your beard two or three times a week, or you risk damaging the skin under and around your facial hair.

If you can do that, avoid using cold water, and follow our steps to having a healthier beard, then you’ll be seeing the differences almost straight away!
